2002 Exploration

In September 2002 Jason Mallinson returned with Richard Hudson, who finned through Sump 1 (40 minutes), almosy every day, as he did not possess a scooter (DPV).

A big thanks are due to Richard Hudson who acted in support for the expedition, and also Tere and Carlos at the Bar Munecas.

En septiembre de 2002 Jason Mallinson vuelve al Pozo Azul acompañado por Richard Hudson, quien, al no disponer de torpedo recorre el primer sifón a aleta casi todos los días de la campaña.

13th September 2002:-

A small DPV (Aquazepp) was transported to Sump 2 along with 2 x 20litre cylinders.

100m of steel cable was also transported through. 8mm spits were placed at various points along the streamway after the canal, and a tight line was established from the end of the canal, all the way to the end of the streamway just before Sump 2. This was to facilitate the solo transport of a large Aquazepp following a dive in Sump2. As there were only 2 personnel on this expedition there was a good chance that one of the big aquazepps would need to be moved through the streamway when only 1 person was in the cave. This tight line proved extremely useful for this scenario, but in the situations where there are 2 or more persons available, it is far easier to transport the large scooters via the streamway bed.

Se lleva hasta el segundo sifón un pequeño torpedo (Aquazepp) junto con dos botellas de 20 litros.

Se transporta también 100m de cable de acero, se instalan spits de 8mm en varios lugares a lo largo de la zona aérea más escarpada y se deja instalado un cable tenso que recorre desde el principio del conducto hasta el principio del segundo sifón. Esto facilitaría el transporte en solitario de un Aquazepp grande para continuar en el segundo sifón. Como la expedición estaba formada por sólo dos personas, era bastante probable que uno de los Aquazepp tuviera que ser transportado por la galería por uno de ellos y sin ayuda. Este cable tenso resultó ser realmente útil en dichas circunstancias, sin embargo, si hay dos o más personas disponibles era mucho más fácil mover los grandes torpedos por la corriente de agua.

14th September 2002:-

Using an Inspiration rebreather, 2 x 20litre bail-out cylinders and 12litre nitrox bail-out, J Mallinson scootered to the end of the line at 1250m. A line reel which had been lost the previous year was found on route. Using fins, to conserve scooter battery power for the way out, the tunnel continued as large as before and at one point dropped to -60m, but soon rose up to the average depth of 50m again.

270m of new passage was explored to a point 1520m into the sump. A line survey was completed on the return to the scooter. 240 minute dive time.

Haciendo uso de un rebreather “Inspiration”, dos botellas de 20 litros de emergencia y una botella de 12 litros de nitrox también de emergencia, J. Mallinson, propulsado por el torpedo, llega hasta el final del hilo guía instalado. Mientras se realiza el trayecto, se encuentra una bobina de hilo que se había perdido el año anterior. Se continúa aleteando, para reservar la batería del torpedo para la salida. La galería continua con las mismas grandes dimensiones y en uno de los puntos desciende has -60m, pero rápidamente vuelve a ascender hasta la profundidad media de 50m.

Se explora un total de 270m de galería, adentrándose 1520m dentro del segundo sifón. La poligonal de la topografía se realiza de vuelta al torpedo. Tiempo de inmersión: 240minutos.

16th September 2002:-

A large Aquazepp scooter was transported to Sump 2 for an exploration dive the following day.

17th September 2002:-

The fast ride-on Aquazepp quickly transported J Mallinson to the 1520m limit, and the continuing passage was explored using the same scooter. 430m of new line was laid to 1950m at a depth of 55m. At 1800m on the return, the Aquazepp scooter stopped working, and whilst considering the long swim back to base, JM started to bash the side of the scooter tube with the Goodman handle on the HID light. This worked, and with a running scooter a relieved JM scootered back to base, minus a primary light source! The 220minute dive proved the worth of using the large fast Aquazepp in this sump. The problem encountered with the scooter was found to be the prototype handles which contain the magnet for the reed switch. The handles had slipped round the tube (which had compressed due to the depth) and the magnet was then too far away from the internal reed switch. All handles now are screwed in place so they cannot slip round the tube.

Se realiza una segunda punta. Utilizando el Aquazepp J. Mallinson alcanza rápidamente los 1520 donde se dejó la exploración y sin dejar de usarlo se continúa por la galería. Se instala un total de 430m de nuevo hilo guía alcanzando una profundidad de 55m. A 1800m a la vuelta, el torpedo Aquazepp deja de funcionar. Así que, teniendo en cuenta el largo tramo que habría que aletear, JM comienza a golpear la pared del tubo del torpedo con el mango de una linterna y afortunadamente dio resultado y con el torpedo funcionando, un aliviado JM vuelve hasta la base, a falta de una de las linternas principales. Un tiempo de inmersión de 220minutos demuestra que vale la pena utilizar un Aquazepp grande y rápido para progresar en este sifón. Más tarde se averigua que el problema tenido con el torpedo se debía a que, en el prototipo, las asas contenían imán para el interruptor. Las asas se habían movido alrededor del tubo de la batería (que se había comprimido debido a la profundidad) y la batería se había quedado muy lejos del interruptor interno magnético. Ahora, todas las asas están atornilladas en su lugar, de tal forma que no se puedan deslizar a lo largo del tubo.
