2004 Exploration

In May 2004 Jason Mallinson returned to Covanera and Pozo Azul with Rupert Skorupka. Rupert planned to continue a high grade survey of Sump 2 whilst Jason concentrated on exploration. After the previous expedition it was thought better to have a habitat situated in sump 2 to make the ever longer decompression times more comfortable. To this end, one of the first objectives was to transport a suitable habitat throught sump 1 (700m) along the canal and up the cascade and streamway to sump 2, no small task in itself. Several days were spent doing this and installing it in a suitable location at -6m in sump 2.

En mayo de 2004 Jason Mallinson vuelve a Covanera y al Pozo Azul con Rupert Skorupka. Rupert tenía planeado realizar una topografía de alto detalle del sifón 2 mientras que Jason iba a centrarse en la exploración. Después de la anterior expedición, se pensó que sería conveniente tener un hábitat situado en el segundo sifón para hacer las largos tiempos de descompresión un poco más cómodos. Con este fin, uno de los principales objetivos era transportar un hábitat adecuado a través del primer sifón (700m), a lo largo del conducto aéreo y subirlo por la cascada y corriente arriba hasta el segundo sifón, una tarea no fácil, (básicamente). Se invirtieron varios días haciendo esto e instalándolo en un lugar adecuado a -6m en el segundo sifón.

15th May 2004:-

Equipment for the first exploration dive was transported to sump 2. The water levels were higher than on previous expeditions in September and this made progress up the cascade and streamway more difficult.

El material para la primera exploración se transporta hasta el segundo sifón. El nivel del agua era mayor que en la anterior expedición en septiembre de 2002 y esto hace el ascenso de la cascada y de la parte aérea más difícil.

16th May 2004:-

More kit was transported into the cave to sump 2. Also that day the habitat started it's journey into the cave. Some difficulty was had getting it through the entrance restriction, but much pulling and pushing eventually saw it through ready for the traverse of sump1.

Se introduce más material  dentro de la cueva hasta el segundo sifón. Ese mismo día el hábitat empieza su viaje  a través de la cueva. Tras superar alguna dificultad intentando pasar por la estrechez de la entrada y tras mucho tirar y empujar, finalmente se dejó listo para su ruta a través del primer sifón.

17th May 2004:-

A large Aquazepp was used to tow the habitat through sump 1, this was quite eventful through the narrow canyon at the start of the sump, but once into the larger passage after 100m, the going was more gentle! The cascade and the streamway proved difficult with just 2 people, but hard work and brute ignorance saw the habitat eventually reach sump 2. A quick dive was done to source a convenient location on the roof of sump 2, at -6m.

Se utilizó un Aquazepp grande para remolcar el hábitat a través del primer sifón, provocando que al principio, donde la galería es más estrecha, el trayecto fuera un poco agitado, pero tras 100, una vez alcanzada la zona donde la galería es más amplia, la marcha fue mucho más suave y agradecida. Pasar la cascada y la galería aérea resultó más complicado, pero con trabajo duro, ignorancia y fuerza bruta el hábitat alcanzó por fin el segundo sifón. Se realiza una inmersión rápida para encontrar un emplazamiento adecuado dentro del sifón 2, a 6m de profundidad.

19th May 2004:-

The large Aquazepp was towed through sump1 and transported to Sump2. JM attempted to install the habitat solo, but this proved difficult and the attempt was abandoned and a retreat made for further materials to allow the habitat to sit level against the very uneven roof.

Se remolca un gran Aquazepp a través del primer sifón y transportado hasta el segundo. JM intenta instalar el hábitat él sólo, pero esto entraña su dificultad y se abandona el intento y se busca un lugar donde dejar los materiales que permitirán asentar el hábitat pese al irregular techo.

20th May 2004:-

The 2nd attempt to place the habitat was more succesful and with extra packers the habitat sat nicely against the roof of sump2. A minor leak from the drain hole was a small inconvenience, but the equipment was now ready to continue exploration.

El segundo intento de emplazar el hábitat fue bastante más exitoso y gracias a la ayuda extra, el hábitat queda bien asentado contra el techo en el segundo sifón. Un pequeño poro en el agujero de desagüe supuso un pequeño inconveniente, pero en conjunto, todo el material estaba todo listo para continuar con la exploración.

21st May 2004:-

The large ride on Aquazepp was used until 1800m, where it was staged. JM continued with the smaller Aquazepp and at the 1950m limit tied on a line reel and continued scootering along the continuing tunnel (6 x 6m). A depth of 70m was reached, and 270m of new passage explored beyond the previous limit. A dive time of 290minutes was made more pleasant by the use of the habitat at -6m, where food and drink could be consumed and keeping the torso out of the water made the decompression more comfortable.

Se utiliza un torpedo Aquazepp grande para llegar hasta 1800m, donde es estacionado. JM continúa con un Aquazepp más pequeño hasta los 1950, última punta, y donde se ata el nuevo hilo guía y se continúa avanzando con el torpedo por la galería de 6x6. Se alcanza una profundidad de 70m y se descubren 270m de nueva galería. El tiempo total de inmersión fueron 290, llevados de una manera mucho más agradable debido al uso del hábitat a -6m, donde se puede consumir agua y comida y mantener el pecho y la cabeza fuera del agua, haciendo la descompresión más cómoda

23rd May 2004:-

A further push dive had to be curtailed 700m into Sump2 when the large Aquazepp developed friction clutch problems. This may have been due to the extra strain required to tow the bulky habitat, through sump1 using this scooter.

Un intento de continuar con la exploración tuvo que ser abortado a 700m dentro del segundo sifón cuando el Aquazepp grande presentó problemas de fricción del embrague. Esto podría haber sido debido al esfuerzo adicional que se requirió para remolcar el voluminoso hábitat a través del primer sifón usando ese torpedo.

Survey Results:

Rupert Skorupka spent much of the time surveying sump2 , to a high grade, to a point 312m into the sump. This work continues.
