1964 Joaquín and Pedro Plana, of the Servicio de Investigaciones Espeleológicas (SIE) from the regional council of Burgos made their first dives at Pozo Azul, exploring a distance of 120m / -28m.

1966 Joaquín Plana explored for a distance of 200m, beating the world cave diving record, that since 1960, had been at the ‘Subterranean River of Garraff’, where a distance of 180m had been dived in the Triton Operation.

1978 During the Easter Week, the Asociación Deportivo Cultural STD made its first foray into Pozo Azul. On this first visit, Pepe Medina explored 30m of passage.

In April 1978 began the first serious dives of José Medina, Carlos Medina and Carlos Ruiz. A little later Alejandro Grande, Fernando Santamaría, Mª Carmen Portilla and Fernando Fuentes joined the team. In December a distance of 570m was reached.

1979 In 1979 the exploration continued. Equipped with triple-bottles of 12 litres, the divers had a range 900m, as long as the same depth maintained.

Fernando Santamaria and Pepe Medina reached 650m, and the following day Mª Carmen Portilla and Fernando de Fuentes ("Morangas") at a distance of 700m emerged into a air filled gallery, named ‘La Burbuja’. This tunnel consisting of canal and streamway terminated after 300m at a new sump.

During this year the survey of the cave was drawn up and completed up to the 2nd sump.

With these results, Pozo Azul became to be the largest sump in Spain, although, a little time after, “el Tunel de la Altántida” (Lanzarote), surpassed it.

1981 Thanks to the acquisition of funds from making a commercial documentary about "carácter espeleológico" the STD team bought new diving equipment, intended for the first dives in Sump 2, and consequently advanced to 70m / -27m.

Participants in these dives were M ª Carmen Portilla, Fernando de Fuentes, with the involvement of Pandi, Josefo, Luis Miguel, Martin and Obelix, Carlos Linares, Juan García Dionisio, José Bedoya.

1982 Luis Ortega and Luis Lapido joined the team, both of them with little more than one years experience in sumps. Also joining were, José Luis ( "Chino") and Felix Lucero.

In August a 15 day campaign was carried out, and consequently the team explored 180 m into the 2nd sump.

With the results of these dives, the resurgence had reached 1080m in length, and another national record was acheived by the team.

Survey to 1989

1983 In the summer, biological samples were taken for the National Natural Sciences Museum. This year, Fidel Molinero joined the team and in autumn over several weekends, the STD divers made a series of dives, finally leaving the limit of exploration at 320m in the second sump.

1986 At the Conference about Euskadi’s Karst, The geology professor E. Sanz Pérez and J. Medina Ferrer presented a report about the subterranean karst morphology of Pozo Azul, giving a complete description of the cave.

1988 At the end of this year, the G.E Gaia, from Madrid, formed by old members of the STD team, continued the exploration. With the help of scooters for making exploration in the 2nd sump, they reached a distance of 390m. From this furthest point, at a depth of -34m, the passage was reported to continue with considerable size.

1989 Realising the difficulty of continuing with the exploration the divers of the G.E Gaia changed their tactics and took advantage of new divers and more sophisticated equipment, and reached 600m, at a maximum depth of 37m.

1991 This was the last year in which the members of G.E Gaia team advanced in the 2nd sump. The expedition took place at the weekends, for 3 consecutive months, and they continued the exploration to a distance of 780 meters at a depth of 39m. The last push was made on October 26th 1991.

At the final tie-off point, a small slate was left marking the teams name, and this was the momento found by Jason Mallinson in 2001, when the next series of explorations began.
