J.Mallinson and Rob Dalby, returned to Pozo Azul to setup equipment and hopefully carry out further exploration beyond the limit of May 2006 (2810m in S2).

Many dives were carried out over the 2 week trip, with the assistance of Spanish divers. Unfortunately the weather was not kind and the entrance became impassable several times due to the high flow of water. A rope was installed thru the entrance restriction so divers could pull themselves in, but at times, the flow was too strong even for this.

The narrow canyon, between S1 and S2, also became treacherous, with deep fast flowing water, just about manageable with no kit, but extremely dangerous with diving equipment. A high level bypass was found to this part of the cave, and subsequently a bivouac camp sited here. This bypass was not suitable for the large Aquazepps, due to climbing involved.

Eventually time ran out, and a decision was made to postpone exploration for later in the year, and retrieve all the equipment staged at S2. Naturally the cave flooded once more, and with the ferry beckoning a couple of days away, it looked very much like most of the kit would be trapped in the cave.

On the final opportunity a streamlined JM managed to pass the entrance using the rope and retrieve all the remaining equipment. A very fast, and eventful exit was made, and following a train of 2 scooters, and several bottles JM was flushed out of the cave.

Se realizaron muchas inmersiones en la campaña de dos semanas, con el apoyo de los buceadores españoles. Desafortunadamente el tiempo no acompañó y la entrada permaneció intransitable en varias ocasiones debido al alto nivel del agua durante la crecida. Se instaló una cuerda a través de la estrechez de la entrada para que los buceadores pudieran asirse a ella  e impulsarse, pero, algunas veces, la corriente era muy fuerte incluso para pasar así.

El estrecho cañón entre el sifón 1 y 2 se volvió traicionero, con profundas aguas rápidas, más o menos manejable sin material, pero extremamente peligrosa con el equipo de buceo. Por esta zona de la cueva se encontró un bypass, o ruta alternativa en la parte superior, así que se utilizó como campamento vivac. Sin embargo, este bypass no era apropiado para el Aquazepp grande debido a la escalada que requería.

Finalmente, pasó el tiempo y se tomó la decisión de posponer la exploración hasta pasados unos meses y se sacó todo el material que había sido depositado en el segundo sifón. Por supuesto, la cueva tuvo otra crecida y con el ferri haciendo señas a un par de días de distancia, parecía francamente que la mayoría del material se iba a quedar atrapado en la cueva.

En una oportunidad final un JM aerodinámico consigue pasar la entrada utilizando la cuerda y recuperar todo el material que quedaba. JM realiza una última y veloz salida seguido por una fila de dos torpedos y varias botellas y consigue salir de la cueva.

Third trip of the year for JM to this site, this time assisted by Rene Houben (DutchCDG).

Several dives were required to achieve the following, so an exploration could be made in a relatively safe and comfortable manner:-

Se requirieron varias inmersiones para poder colocar el material de la siguiente manera y así hacer una inmersión a punta de la manera más segura y cómoda posible:

Position 2 large Aquazepps at S2

Position 8 cylinders at S2

Transport Mini O2 rebreather to S2 and place in 1^st Habitat.

Transport 28Ah battery pack for heated jacket and place at -24m in S2

Stage 2 OFF Luxfer Nitrox cylinders in S2 at approx. 300m   (R.Houben)

Set up bivouac camp for camping night prior to push.

Transport other minor kit to S2 necessary for exploration

Eventually after some helpful diving by R.Houben all the equipment was in place for a push dive.

JM, RH and J.Lopera entered cave late in the evening and carried the final equipment to S2. RH,JL left the cave and JM stayed at bivouac camp alone for the night. After a relatively comfortable nights sleep and an early rise, followed by breakfast, JM entered water at approx 8am.

El día anterior a la inmersión de punta JM, RH y J. Lopera entran por la tarde a la cueva y llevan consigo el último material restante hasta el segundo sifón. RH y JL salen de la cueva y JM se queda solo en el campamento vivac a pasar la noche. Después de dormir relativamente cómodo toda la noche, madrugar a la  mañana siguiente, y de un buen desayuno, JM entra al agua aproximadamente las 8.

Descending into S2, Jm momentarily stopped at the -12m habitat to stage a battery pack for the heated jacket. After then descending the slope to -25m JM mounted the large Zepp and set off along the horizontal tunnel. Almost immediately disaster struck and the diver was pulled back violently by some entrapment. This turned out to be the umbilical cable for the Barbolight LED main light which had snagged on a roof pendant, and which was now broken, and thus left the diver with 2 x helmet mounted side lights and an HID lamp of 2.5 hours duration, all for a potential 10 hour dive!  A quick decision was made to carry on the dive using the side lights out to the end of the line, then use the HID for the exploration phase. Quick time was made to 2000m collecting the staged cylinders on route. The large Zepp was left at 2000m and the medium tow behind was then used for the rest of the dive beyond this point. 1hour 15mins. after leaving base JM arrived at 2810m and the end of the line, picking up the in-situ reel this was used to deploy the remainder of the line on it. A new reel was then tied on and the continuing large tunnel followed. This tunnel was very clear, up to 10m wide in places and at a constant depth of 70m. After 45mins of exploration and 2hours into the dive the line was tied off at 3530m and JM turned for base conscious of the decompression time accumulating. 720m of new passage had been explored and as on previous dives the tunnel continued ahead large, deep and clear.

At the 3hour point JM was back at 2000m and the large fast Zepp collected, the heated jacket was also plugged in and a lovely warm flush of air spread through the divers drysuit as he headed back to shallower waters. Decompression stops began at -30m and the computer was showing 6hours of stops, of which the last 4.5hours would be in the habitats.

10hours after starting the dive JM surfaced to a support team at Sump2 dive base and after a 2 hour break to drink hot soup and rest, JM travelled with J.Lopera and D.Perez back to surface and a lovely Spanish evening.

Re-assembled habitat ready to be placed at -12m

Descendiendo por el segundo sifón, JM hace una parada momentánea en hábitat situado a -12m para depositar un paquete de baterías para el chaleco eléctrico. Después de descender la fuerte pendiente ha lleva hasta -25m JM manta en Aquazepp grande y empieza sigue su trayecto por la parte horizontal de la galería. Casi de inmediato ocurre un desastroso incidente: el buceador es violentamente retirado del torpedo enganchado en algún saliente. Resultó ser cable de la linterna Barbolight de LEDs, luz principal, que se había quedado atrapado de un saliente del techo y que se había roto, dejando así al buceador con dos linternas montadas en los laterales del casco y con una linterna HID de 2.5h de duración, todo ello para una inmersión prevista de 10horas! Se toma una rápida decisión: seguir la inmersión utilizando las linternas laterales hasta el final del hilo guía y dejar la HID para continuar en la fase de exploración. Se llega a los 2000m en poco tiempo, recogiendo las botellas en el trayecto. Se deja el Aquazepp grande a 2000m y el mediano, que había sido remolcado tras el buceador se utiliza para seguir la inmersión a partir de ese punto. 1h y 15minutos después de salir de la base, JM llega a 2810m y final de la línea, recoge el carrete que había quedado in-situ y se utiliza para seguir tendiendo el resto de la línea. Una vez acabado se ata un nuevo carrete y se continúa por el amplio túnel inundado. La galería tiene aguas cristalinas y muy buena visibilidad, con unos 10m de ancho en algunos puntos y a una profundidad constante de 70m. Después de 45 minutos de exploración y 2h buceando, el hilo guía se ata a 3530m y JM vuelve a la base consciente del tiempo de descompresión acumulado. Se habían explorado 720m de nueva galería y, como en anteriores inmersiones, la galería continúa hacia delante, enorme y cristalina.

Después de 3 horas JM está de vuelta a 2000m y se recoge el Aquazepp grande y rápido y se enchufa el chaleco eléctrico. Una agradable corriente de aire caliente se extiende por el traje seco del buceador mientras se dirige a aguas menos profundas. Las paradas de descompresión se inician a -30m y el ordenador marca 6 horas de parada, de las cuales, 4.5h se realizarían en los hábitats.

10 horas después de empezar la inmersión el buceador JM alcanza la superficie con un equipo de apoyo en la base del segundo sifón y tras un descanso de 2horas para tomar sopa caliente y reposar, JM bucea con J. Lopera y D. Pérez de vuelta a la superficie y a una encantadora tarde española.
