2006

In May 2006 on a solo expedition J.Mallinson returned to continue the exploration of Pozo Azul. One of the main objectives before any exploration was to permanently secure the ‘habibin’ to the uneven roof of Sump2. This would ensure a long term, warm decompression haven for this expedition and for future explorations.

A purpose built dry tube was constructed back in the UK and several lengths of scaffold tube and several clips were transported through sump1 and along the canal and streamway to Sump2 dive base.

On the beach at Sump 2 the scaffold frame with 4 adjustable length legs was attached to the ‘habibin’ and once this was complete the structure was dragged underwater to around  6m depth. A lot of time was spent attempting to install the ‘habibin’ underneath the roof but the top heavy (scaffold) meant the lone diver had many frustrating hours fighting with  the beast, before a combination of anchor ropes and tenacity eventually saw the ‘habibin’ installed at 7.5m depth.

En mayo de 2006 en una expedición en solitario J, Mallinson vuelve a Covanera para continuar la exploración en el Pozo Azul. Uno de los objetivos principales antes de cualquier exploración era asegurar permanentemente el hábitat (habibin) al irregular techo del segundo sifón. Esto aseguraría a largo plazo refugio para cálidas descompresiones para esa y las futuras exploraciones.

En Reino Unido se construyó una cámara seca de aire desmontable y por ello varios trozos de tubo de andamio y anclajes para el mismo se transportaron a través del primer sifón, corriente arriba por la galería y subidos por la cascada hasta el comienzo del segundo sifón.

En la playa donde comienza el segundo sifón la estructura del andamio con cuatro patas ajustables se adjunta al “habibin”, y una vez montada toda la estructura se  arrastra bajo el agua hasta una profundidad aproximada de 6m.  Se invierte mucho tiempo intentando instalar el “habibin” bajo el techo porque el anclaje de la pesada parte superior (andamio) supone para un buceador en solitario muchas horas de frustración. Pero tras luchar tenazmente con la bestia y después de una combinación de cuerdas de anclaje, finalmente el “habibin” queda instalado a 7.5m de profundidad.

Se transportan dos botellas de 20litros al segundo sifón y se miden las dimensiones del “habibin” para poder llevar al día siguiente las barras de andamio necesarias.

Transported 8 x 1.5m scaffold tubes, 8 x clips, drills, saws etc in purpose built dry tube, which was towed behind Zepp in S1.

Once the scaffold frame was attached to the ‘habibin’ several hours were spent trying to install on the roof of Sump2, but the combination of single cylinder, with very wet breathing DV, and unstable ‘habibin’ once full of air, defeated the diver for this day.

Later this day, reinforcements arrived in the form of David Perez and Jorge Lopera, two Spanish cave divers from Malaga, who had turned up, hoping they could help out.

This extra help proved fotuitous for the expedition as now the progress of transporting all the necessary equipment for an exploration dive could be accelerated.

Se transportan ocho barras de andamio de 1.5m, ocho clips, taladro, sierra, etc. con el propósito de construir la cámara de aire, que son remolcados por el primer sifón detrás del torpedo Zepp.

Una vez que se unieron el marco del andamio al “habibin”, se invirtieron muchas horas intentando instalarlo en el techo del segundo sifón, pero la combinación de una sola botella y un inestable “habibin” lleno de aire, agotó al buceador por ese día.

Más tarde ese mismo día llegaron refuerzos: David Pérez y Jorge Lopera (dos espeleobuceadores de Málaga, España) que aparecieron con la esperanza de poder echar una mano.

Esta ayuda extra resultó ser muy fructífera a lo largo de la exploración ya que se pudo así acelerar considerablemente el ritmo de transporte del material de buceo para la exploración.

All divers to Sump2 transporting 2 x Zepps, 4 cylinders and utilising the wire system (for the streanway) installed in 2002. JM spent 90 mins. in Sump2 and finally installed the ‘habibin’ at -7.5m.

Further Spanish assistance arrived that day.

Todos los buceadores  entraron al segundo sifón transportando dos Zepps y 4 botellas y utilizando el cable de acero instalado en el año 2002 por la galería aérea. JM pasó 90minutos en el segundo sifón y finalmente instaló el “habibin” a -7.5m.

Más ayuda española llegó ese día.

All 3 divers travelled to Sump2 and assited JG who transported an emergency bail-out cylinder (nitrox) to 300m (-24m) and a further emergency cylinder at -15m.

Los tres buceadores fueron al segundo sifón, donde ayudaron a JG, quien transportó una botella de emergencia cargada con nitros a 300m (-24m) y una botella más de emergencia a -15m.

JM entered cave alone and make steady progress to Sump2 where KISS rebreather, 2 x 20litre cylinders and 1 x Luxfer Trimix were collected. A large Zepp was ridden and medium Zepp towed. A quick journey out to 2000m was made and there the large Zepp was staged and further progress was made using the medium tow behind Zepp. The end of the line was soon reached at 2220m and the old reel which was still there used to continue line laying. The reel became difficult to deploy the line and after 200m a new line reel was tied on and used. The average depth was -65m and a large impressive tunnel , up to 10m wide and 5-6m high, continued. At 2hours the turn around time 590m of new line had been laid to 2810m and the tunnel continued ahead. The diver turned and headed back to base.

5 hours of decompression awaited back at base and after severe discomfort from cold and a bad back, JM was relieved to enter the ’habibin’, which was used for the 9m and 6m stops. During the decompression several visits form DP relieved the boredom and after 8.5 hours JM emerged from Sump2.

DP, JL, JG, AS had in the meantime transported all the un-needed equipment back down the streamway to the canal and an easy exit from the cave was made after 12 hours.

JM entra solo en la cueva y hace un firme y continuo progreso al segundo sifón, donde recoge un rebreather KISS, dos botellas de 20litros y una botella Luxfer Trimix. Se avanza utilizando el Zepp grande y remolcando el mediano. Se avanza rápidamente hasta 2000m y en ese punto se deja el Zepp grande y se continúa progresando utilizando un el mediano que había sido remolcado hasta allí. El final del hilo guía se alcanza inmediatamente a 2200m, donde se encuentra todavía el carrete viejo de exploraciones anteriores, que es utilizado para proseguir tendiendo la línea. La bobina se hace difícil de desplegar y es costoso tender más hilo guía, así que, después de 200m se ata un nuevo carrete y se continúa el avance. La profundidad media es de 65m transcurriendo por un impresionante y gran túnel de dimensiones continuas de hasta 10m de ancho y 5-6 de altura. A las dos horas aproximadamente, se habían tendido 590m de nuevo hilo guía, hasta 2810m y la galería continuaba. El buceador da la vuelta y se dirige de nuevo a la base.

Aguadaban 5 horas de descompresión de vuelta a la superficie y tras considerables molestias por el frio y el dolor de espalda, JM se siente aliviado al entrar en el “habibin”, que fue utilizado para hacer las paradas de 9 y 6. Durante la descompresión DP realizó varias visitas amenizando el aburrimiento. Finalmente, tras 8.5horas de inmersión, JM emerge del segundo sifón.

Mientras tanto DP, JL, JG y AS habían transportado todo el material innecesario de vuelta a la galería seca y dejado al comienzo de la misma. Tras 12horas, se realiza una fácil salida  de la cueva.

A long day to retrieve all the remaining cylinders from Sump2 dive base.

A late start due to bad stomach, which persisted throughout the day and a record was set for the number of times a drysuit has been taken off and donned again, beyond a sump.

Following this exploration dive, JM decided to review the equipment necessary for such long deep dives and vowed to enhance the infrastructure and equipment used to obtain a more comfortable dive next time.

This exploration would not have happened without the support of David Perez, Jorge Lopera, Josep Guarro and Alvinas Subinas, to whom JM is extremely grateful. This collaboration became the start of further great teamwork explorations at Pozo Azul

Se invierte un largo día en recuperar las botellas que habían quedado en la playa al comienzo del segundo sifón.

Un comienzo tardío debido al dolor de estómago, que persistió todo el día y el establecimiento de un récord en el número de veces que un traje seco había sido quitado y puesto de nuevo fueron las características del día.

A consecuencia de esta exploración, JM decide revisar el material necesario para inmersiones tan largas y profundas y se compromete a mejorar la infraestructura y el equipamiento utilizado para obtener inmersiones más cómodas la próxima vez.

Esta exploración no hubiera sido tenido lugar sin la ayuda de David Pérez, Jorge Lopera, Josep Guarro y Álvaro Subiñas, a los cuales JM les está realmente agradecido. Esta colaboración resultó ser el comienzo de un gran trabajo en equipo en las siguientes exploraciones del Pozo Azul.
